Bimbo Bakeries investing $14.7 million, creating 30 jobs in Orangeburg

April 21, By MARTHA ROSE BROWN T&D Staff Writer

Bimbo Bakeries USA is planning to invest $14.7 million and create 30 additional jobs at its Orangeburg facility.

The bakery, located on Broughton Street, manufactures bread and roll products.

Orangeburg County Council on Monday approved third reading of an ordinance providing a fee-in-lieu of taxes economic development incentive to the company. The incentive allows the company to pay a fee based on a 6 percent assessment ratio, rather than the standard 10.5 percent.

Council previously approved including the Bimbo Bakeries USA expansion in the Orangeburg-Dorchester joint industrial park, which is not a physical park but allows other incentives. Council also approved the issuance of special source revenue credits.

The project had previously been known publicly as Project BBU.

In late 2014, Bimbo Bakeries USA applied to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control for an air permit allowing it to replace an oven for its conventional bread line as well as install a gas-fired oven for the bun line.

Bimbo Bakeries USA, a subsidiary of Mexico’s Grupo Bimbo, is among North America’s largest food processing and distribution companies.

Bimbo Bakeries USA has more than 27,000 U.S. associates and operates 70 manufacturing locations in the United States. In addition, there are 13,000 distribution routes.
